MTEC focuses on research management and the key elements involved under the concept of coherence to create a meaningful impact. It prioritizes research excellence to meet the needs of the target group and the relevant problem of the country based on the capability of materials technology, including design, engineering and production. These undertakings cover four main areas as follows: 1) Materials Synthesis & Processing, 2) Specific Materials Characterization, Testing & Analysis, 3) Enabling Engineering, and 4) Specific Applications, such as construction, rheology for food, and human-centric design for health. During its implementation, there were a balance between research and development in creating new knowledge and application of the research results to a wide range of users so that our knowledge and technological capabilities are continuously used in practice.

In addition, MTEC cooperates with various sectors, such as the private business sector, the government sector, the social sector, and the community, as well as agencies or international organizations to participate in planning and formulating research problems for practical use. MTEC also places importance on stakeholders’ needs as well as participates in identifying common goals. These cover the targeting of desirable productivity attributes and analyzing the environment or context in production, and related applications, actual production capability (manufacturability), rules, regulations, standards. These endeavors are expected to help increase the chance creating socio-economic impact, apart from obtaining the results in other forms, such as a body of knowledge, research articles, intellectual property, and prototypes. MTEC also places emphasis on the process of technology transfer and utilization by developing and providing critical supporting information, such as the development of production processes, the preparation of user manuals, maintenance and Bill of Material (BOM).
