MTEC, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), hosts an Online Seminar on “Life Cycle Approach to Plastic Pollution Management”MTEC hosts event “In-Depth PMUC Funding: Developing Project Proposals for High Impact.”

On July 17, 2024, the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), NSTDA, led by Dr. Jitti Mungkalasiri, team leader of the Life Cycle Inventory and Data Applications for Sustainability and Trade Research Team at the Technology and Informatics Institute for Sustainability (TIIS), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), organized an online seminar on “Life Cycle Approach to Plastic Pollution Management” via Webex. The seminar aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), including practical applications and real-world examples from diverse stakeholders. Additionally, the seminar aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement effective plastic management strategies aligned with emerging international regulations, particularly the forthcoming legally binding treaty on plastic pollution and the marine environment. The seminar featured expert speakers from UNEP, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and MTEC.
The speakers and the topics of their presentations were as follows:
- Dr. Llorenç Milà i Canals, Head of the Secretariat—Life Cycle Initiative, UNEP, presented on “What is a Life-Cycle Approach, and how is it applied in policies to address plastic pollution?”
- Ms. Claudia Giacovelli, Life Cycle Initiative, UNEP, presented on “LCA studies to compare plastic product options.”
- Dr. Phatchari Mankong, Technical University of Denmark, presented on “Avoiding Regrettable Substitutions with an LCA tool: USEtox.”
- Dr. Jitti Mungkalasiri presented “Examples of LCA use to inform Plastics Policy” in collaboration with Ms. Claudia Giacovelli.
The online seminar attracted 217 participants and garnered positive feedback from a diverse audience, including private sector representatives, researchers, university faculty, and government officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Pollution Control Department, and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council. Additionally, international experts with relevant expertise participated. This event was deemed a success, effectively disseminating knowledge, fostering experiences, sharing, and providing essential tools for robust plastic management strategies. It also fostered exchanging ideas and perspectives among domestic and international experts and stakeholders.
