Beach Chair Positioners for Shoulder Arthroscopy
Background
In general, laparoscopic surgery performed in the supine position requires 6 medical personnel to support and adjust the positions of the patient during the operation.
Goal
To develop positioning device for arthroscopic shoulder surgery in the beach chair position. The benefits of the device are proved to be labor-saving, easy to use and safe, and can also be used with general operating table as an add-on.
What does the research team do?
- Observes the practice for positioning the patients in the operating theatre.
- Designs the beach chair positioners which is labor-saving and safe.
- Testes the device using finite element method before applying it to the patients.
- Creates a prototype
Performance of the device
- Be able to hold the weight up to 150 kilograms
- Requires only 2 persons during the surgical operation (a surgeon and an assistant)
- Equipped with superior safety system and works smoothly
- Enhances the efficiency of the surgical operation
- Freely adjust the positions of the patient during the operation
Research status
- “Beach Chair Positioners for Shoulder Arthroscopy”, patent No. 52185, was granted on August 20, 2009.
- Associate Professor Dr.Bancha Chernchujit has donated the positioning devices to medical specialists and three rural hospitals, i.e., Lampang Hospital, Nakhon Pathom Hospital and Chonburi Hospital.
Outlook
Ready for technology transfer.
