Research background
Thailand is a country with good climate and geography, thus giving the country an agricultural advantage. Most of the cultivation systems rely on natural resources, such as soil, water and climate, as the main factor. However, the demand of consumers has been increasing while the cultivation areas are limited. Therefore, the development of agricultural technology is important and necessary to increase the efficiency and productivity, as well as create value-added for agricultural products.
Agricultural products, such as planting bags, fruits wrapping bags, and mulch are important factors that affect the quality and quantity of the produce, especially high-priced vegetables and fruits. At present, these agricultural products are produced and sold domestically and most of them are made of plastic materials with no additional features. Although they are cheap, they do not possess good quality because they allow less air and humidity flow inside the planting bags, thus the plant roots cannot fully spread and its growth is inhibited.
Research objective
The research team plans to develop materials to increase the quality and productivity of agricultural produce.
Research process
The research team has developed an agricultural product, called Magik Growth, to meet the needs of modern agriculture. Magik Growth is made from nonwoven materials which are porous, thus water and air can pass through the material and help the plant roots grow and spread efficiently. The material used in Magik Growth is also provides optimum light wavelengths for plants to grow more properly and produce high-quality and high-quantity produce. Magik Growth can be formed into various products, such as planting bags, fruit wrapping bags, and mulch.
- Magik growth quality
Magik Growth products are made from nonwoven fabrics, which can be designed by specifying their characteristics, such as porosity and thickness, and modifying its optical properties to be wavelength selective by using certain type of polymer and additives. Moreover, the research team has applied spunbond nonwoven formation process and modification to induce certain special properties. This help create products’ characteristics suitable for water and air passage, and can filter appropriate wavelength of the light for optimum plants growth yielding high-quality and high-quantity. The product properties can also be customized depending on the implementation.
- Magik growth progress
The prototypes for melon and tomato planting bags are currently field tested. There are entrepreneurs interested in this technology, and licensing agreement is being negotiated.
Future plan
The research team plans to develop and improve Magik Growth to be applicable to a wider kind of plants.
